Time totals
The Time aggregation setting of a variable decides its quarter and year totals, such as a sum, an average, or the last value.
A variable has one value for each period. A quarter or year total combines those values into one number. The correct method depends on the variable. Revenue for a quarter is a sum, but cash at the end of a quarter is the last value. The Time aggregation setting of each variable tells Eigenn which method to use.
1. Show quarter and year totals
In the grid header, select Σ (Roll-up). Each selection moves to the next setting:
| Setting | Total columns |
|---|---|
| Roll-up: Monthly | None |
| Roll-up: Year | One column after each year, such as 2026 |
| Roll-up: Quarter | One column after each quarter, such as 2026 Q3 |
Total columns are read-only. A total column has the forecast shading when one or more of its periods is a forecast period.
2. Choose the time aggregation
- Go to Scenario planning → open a model.
- Put the pointer on the variable row and select ⋮ (Options for variable name).
- Select Aggregation → Time, then select an option.
| Option | Total | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Sum | Adds the period values | Flows, such as revenue, costs, and new customers |
| Average | The average of the period values | Rates and prices |
| Initial | The value of the first period | Opening balances, such as Starting cash |
| Final | The value of the last period | Closing balances, such as cash, headcount, and customers |
| Formula | Runs the formula of the variable again on the totals of its inputs | Ratios, such as a gross margin percentage |
| No aggregation | No total | Values that have no meaningful total |
Example: Gross margin % has the formula Gross profit / Revenue. With Formula, the quarter total is the quarter gross profit divided by the quarter revenue. With Average, it is the average of three monthly percentages. These two results are different when revenue changes from month to month.
Use Formula on formula variables only. On an input, Formula gives no total.
3. Blanks change totals
The Blanks in data setting in the options menu changes how a total uses empty cells. For the values 10, blank, and 20:
| Blanks in data | Average | Sum |
|---|---|---|
| Treat as blank | 15 | 30 |
| Treat as zero | 10 | 30 |
| Error | No total | No total |
4. Other places that use this setting
- Granularity changes: When you change a monthly model to quarterly, Eigenn combines the stored input values with this setting. Formula and No aggregation stop the change. See Time granularity.
- Linked models: When a variable uses Formula, a linked value in its formula totals with the Time aggregation of the source variable.
The Aggregation menu also has Dimension and Data. Dimension sets totals across dimension items. See Dimension totals.
