Use a variable from another model
Link another planning model, then read its variables in formulas as Model.Variable references.
A formula can read a variable from a different planning model of your team. Use this when separate teams own separate parts of the plan. For example, a headcount model calculates payroll, and the operating plan reads that payroll. Each model stays small, and each owner edits only their own model.
1. Link the source model
- Go to Scenario planning → open the model that needs the value.
- Select More → Linking. You can also select Model settings → Data sources.
- Find the section that says "Attach a team planning model".
- Open Select a model and select the source model.
- Select Add source.
The model shows in the list under the control, with its number of variables and a status. Wait for the status ready before you use it.
These rules apply:
- A model cannot link to itself.
- A model that is already linked does not show in Select a model.
- Eigenn refuses a link that makes a loop, such as two models that read from each other.
- If no other model is available, the panel shows "Create another planning model to make it available as a Formula source."
2. Use the variable in a formula
Write the model name, a dot (.), and the variable name. Select the name from the suggestions in the formula editor to get the spelling right.
Headcount plan.Payroll + ContractorsIn this example, Headcount plan is the source model and Payroll is its variable. Contractors is a variable in the current model.
These rules apply to a linked value:
- It is read-only. To change it, edit the source model.
- Eigenn matches the values by period. Use the same granularity in both models.
- When the source model has no value for a period, the reference is blank. If the source variable uses Treat as zero for Blanks in data, the reference is 0.
- When a variable uses Formula for time totals, the linked value totals with the Time aggregation of the source variable.
3. Keep the link current
When someone changes the source model, Eigenn refreshes the link in the background. The status in the list shows the state of the link:
| Status | Meaning | Message in a formula that uses the link |
|---|---|---|
| connecting | Eigenn did not load the values yet. | None |
| ready | The values are current. | None |
| running | A refresh is in progress. | "The linked source is refreshing. Try again shortly." |
| stale | The source changed, and a refresh is necessary. | "The linked source changed and must refresh before this formula can be calculated." |
| failed | The refresh did not complete. | The refresh error, or "The linked source could not be refreshed." |
4. Remove a link
- Change every formula that uses the source model.
- Open the same panel and select Remove next to the source model.
If a formula still uses the source model, Eigenn keeps the link. The message tells you to replace every model name.Variable reference first.
