Time granularity
Choose daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly periods for a model, and know what happens when you change it.
The granularity is the length of one model period. A new blank model is monthly. Set the granularity before you add values and formulas. A later change works only in some cases. A change to smaller periods is not possible when inputs hold values.
1. The granularity options
| Granularity | A period starts on | Column label |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Each day | Sep 14, 2026 |
| Weekly | A Monday | Week of Sep 14, 2026 |
| Monthly | The first day of the month | Sep ‘26 |
| Quarterly | 1 January, 1 April, 1 July, or 1 October | Q3 ‘26 |
| Yearly | 1 January | 2026 |
2. Choose the right granularity
Use the largest period that your decision needs. Smaller periods make more columns and more values to check.
| Decision | Granularity |
|---|---|
| A 13-week cash plan | Weekly |
| An operating plan or a budget | Monthly |
| A board plan for several years | Quarterly |
| A long-range strategic plan | Yearly |
To see quarter or year totals in a monthly model, keep the model monthly. Select Σ (Roll-up) in the grid header. See Time totals.
3. Change the granularity
- Go to Scenario planning → open a model.
- Select Model settings.
- In Granularity, select the new option. Eigenn moves the start and end dates to the start of the new periods.
- Select Apply changes.
4. What happens to the values
- Formula variables calculate again in the new periods. A time reference such as
[t-12]counts periods, not months, so check it after the change. - Stored values, such as typed inputs, combine into the larger periods. Eigenn uses the Time aggregation of each variable. With Sum, three monthly inputs of 5 become one quarterly input of 15. With Average, they become 5.
Eigenn refuses the change in these cases. The message names the cause.
| Cause | Action |
|---|---|
| The new periods are smaller, and a variable holds stored values. | Keep the current granularity, or start a new model. |
| A new period is not fully inside the old range. For example, a monthly model starts in September, so the third quarter has only one month. | Set the start and end of the range on quarter or year boundaries first. |
| A variable with stored values uses Formula or No aggregation for Time. | Set Sum, Average, Initial, or Final. |
| The model has a Last actual date. | Turn it off, apply the change, and then set it again. |
| A period formula or a scenario change does not fit a new period exactly. | Remove the period formula or the scenario change. |
