Filter a view
The filter types of a view, how they combine, and what Eigenn shows for totals and hidden data.
Filters decide what a view shows. You add them in the view editor with Add filter. A view can have up to 100 filters. A filter that selects values can hold up to 500 values.
Filters are presentation rules. They do not delete or change model data.
Filter types
| Filter | Operators | What the view keeps |
|---|---|---|
| Variable | is one of, is none of | The selected variables. |
| Variable contains | none | The variables whose names contain the text. The match ignores upper and lower case. It does not match section or group names. |
| Variable has dimension | has dimension, does not have dimension | The variables that use, or do not use, the selected dimension. |
| Variable in section | none | All rows in the selected section. |
| Variable in group | none | All rows in the selected group. |
| Dimension | is one of, is none of | The selected items of one dimension. |
| Scenario | none | The selected scenarios. |
| Time period | none | The periods from the start period to the end period. |
| Chart | is one of, is none of | The selected dashboard cards. |
A filter without an operator choice shows is within.
How filters combine
Every filter must match.
- Two filters on variables keep only the rows that match both. For example, Variable in section "Operating expenses" and Variable contains "Salaries" keep only salary rows in that section.
- Two Time period filters keep only the periods where both ranges overlap.
- Two Scenario filters keep only the scenarios in both.
- When no row matches, the view is empty.
Dimension filters and totals
- Eigenn calculates the direct total of a variable again from the visible dimension items.
- Eigenn does not show a value that depends on hidden items. This stops the view from showing hidden data. The view shows "Values that depend on excluded dimension members are unavailable in this view. Open the full model to review them."
- A variable that does not use the selected dimension stays visible. Add Variable has dimension to hide it.
- A dimension that is mapped to the filtered dimension follows the filter. A dimension without a mapping stays unfiltered.
Scenario filters
- In the view, the Scenarios menu lists only the allowed scenarios.
- A teammate who opens a shared view sees the scenario that the view saved.
- A scenario filter does not hide variables. A variable without a scenario change shows its base value.
- If no allowed scenario exists, the view shows No matching scenario.
Warnings in the editor
The editor shows warnings below the filters. You can still save the view.
| Warning | What to do |
|---|---|
| "These rules exclude everything." | Remove or change a filter that has no overlap with the others. |
| "Chart filters do not hide spreadsheet variables. Add a variable rule or share a dashboard instead." | Add a variable filter when the rows must also be hidden. |
| "Variables without the selected dimension remain visible. Add a ‘Variable has dimension’ rule to hide them." | Add Variable has dimension. |
| "These unlinked dimensions remain unfiltered: …" | Map the dimensions, or add a Dimension filter for each one. |
