Formulas
Write one formula for a variable, and Eigenn calculates it for every period and every dimension item.
A formula tells Eigenn how to calculate one variable. You write it one time, in the Formula column of the model grid. Eigenn runs the same formula in every period of the model and for every item of the variable's dimensions.
A formula names other variables, such as Revenue - COGS. It can also read other periods, call functions, test conditions, and describe a range of possible values. When a connected source supplies actuals for a variable, the actual periods keep those values. The formula calculates the forecast periods.

In the Formula column, Gross profit shows Revenue - COGS, Net income shows Gross profit - Operating expenses, and Cash shows Cash [previous] + Net income. The Net income and Cash formulas are cut off at the cell edge. The Revenue, COGS, and Operating expenses inputs have no formula.](/docs/screenshots/planning-grid.png)
If formulas are new to you, read the Formulas concept first. Then use the pages below. Each page covers one task or one set of facts.
Write and read formulas
- Write a formula: open the formula bar, use suggestions and templates, and save.
- Formula syntax: names, numbers, operators, comments, and the order of operations.
- Functions: every function, with its parameters and one example.
- Time references: read the previous period, a fixed period, or a range of periods.
- Dimension references: read one item, a set of items, or the sum of all items.
- Conditionals:
if,then, else, comparisons, and,or, andnot. - Blanks and helpers: blank values, the Blanks in data setting, and built-in values such as
month. - Uncertainty: ranges and distributions, and their P10, P50, and P90 results.
- Troubleshoot formulas: the error messages and how to correct them.
Common formulas
- Cash and balance sheet: formulas for balances that carry forward.
- Cohorts: formulas for groups of customers by start period.
- Currency and multi-entity: formulas for more than one currency or entity.
- Headcount: formulas for people and payroll.
- SaaS metrics: formulas for recurring revenue and unit economics.
- Seasonality: formulas for values that change by month of the year.
