Apply a dimension
Break a variable down by a dimension so that it gets one row for each item, and control the order of two or more dimensions.
When you apply a dimension to a variable, the variable gets one row for each item of the dimension. The row of the variable becomes the total row. The formula of the variable stays the same and runs for each item.
You can apply a dimension from the variable or from the dimension. The dimension must have at least one item.
1. Apply it from the variable
- Go to Scenario planning → open a model.
- On the variable row, select the options button (⋮). Its label is Options for and the variable name.
- Select Dimensions. The row shows None or the number of dimensions, such as 1 applied.
- Under Break down and the variable name, select the dimension.
To remove the dimension, select it again to clear the check mark. A dimension without items is not available. If the model has no dimensions, the menu shows "No reusable dimensions yet."
2. Or apply it from the dimension
- In the model, select More → Dimensions → the dimension.
- Under Apply to variable, select the variable in the list.
- Select Add and the dimension name, such as Add Region.
The list under the button shows the dimensions of the selected variable in order. Use Move dimension up and Move dimension down to change the order. Use Remove dimension to remove one.
3. Use two or more dimensions
A variable can use more than one dimension, such as Department and then Employee. The rows nest in the order of the list. The first dimension is the outer level. Each row of the first dimension holds one row for each item of the second dimension.
The order changes only the rows. It does not change the formula.
4. Change dimensions before you type item values
When you apply a dimension, Eigenn makes the item rows from the row of the variable:
| Variable | Value of each new item row |
|---|---|
| Input with Dimension aggregation Sum | The value of the variable divided by the number of items |
| Input with any other aggregation | The value of the variable |
| Variable with a formula | The result of the formula for that item |
For example, an input of 9,000 with Sum gets 3,000 in each of three items. The total stays 9,000.
Sum also splits a rate. An input of 25% gets 6.25% in each of four items. For a rate or a price, set Aggregation → Dimension → Average before you apply the dimension. Then each item starts at 25%.
Eigenn makes the item rows again when you:
- add, remove, or reorder the dimensions of a variable
- add, rename, delete, or reorder the items of a dimension
Each time, the item rows of input variables get values from the variable row, as in the table. Values that you typed in item rows are not kept. Set up the dimensions and items first. Then type the item values.
