Link a variable to data
Attach one item of a data source to a variable so that its actual periods show source values.
A link connects one variable to one item of a data source. The item can be a transaction category, a Xero account, or an invoice total. After you link it, the variable shows the source value in each actual period. These cells are read-only. In the forecast periods, the variable runs its formula or takes your input.
Link a variable when you want actuals in the model without typing them.
Before you start
- The source badge on the Data page must show Active. Eigenn does not attach an item from a source that has not completed a refresh.
- The model needs a Last actual date. Without it, the model has no actual periods, and a linked variable shows no source values.
1. Open the Data sources panel
Use one of these paths in the model:
- Select Model settings → Data sources.
- Select More → Data sources.
- On the variable row, select the database icon (Add data). The panel opens, and the Transaction categories section selects that variable.
2. Attach the item
Each section of the panel links a different kind of data.
| Section | Choose | Then select |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction categories | A source, a category, and a variable | Attach category actuals |
| Actual data | A provider, Issued invoice amount or Issued invoice count, and a variable | Attach actuals |
| Statement actuals | A Xero source, an account, and a variable | Attach statement actuals |
- The account list shows the account code, the account name, and P&L or Balance sheet.
- The provider list shows each source of imported invoices, for example
stripe. Invoices that you create in Eigenn show aseigenn. - Transaction-category actuals need a monthly model.
If Eigenn cannot attach the item, the section shows the reason in red.
3. Check the link
- The section lists the link, for example "Revenue ← category sales". Category links are in a list with a count, such as 2 attached categories.
- Each actual cell of the variable shows a small database icon.
- The database icon on the variable row becomes a source badge. Select it to see Source for the variable, with the provider, the freshness, and the coverage.
Link all actuals at one time
Above the grid, select Import actuals. Eigenn then:
- Adds an Actuals section to the model.
- Adds one variable for each transaction category that is not excluded. Each variable links to the category.
- Adds an amount variable and a count variable for each invoice provider. For Eigenn invoices, the names are Issued invoices and Issued invoices count. For other providers, the name includes the provider, for example Issued invoices (stripe).
- Sets the Last actual date to the previous month, if the model has no date and includes that month.
Eigenn uses the existing bank-transaction source, or creates one with the label Bank category actuals. When the model has a Last actual date or a linked category or invoice variable, the button shows Refresh actuals. A second import skips the categories and providers that already have a variable.
Remove a link
In the section, select Detach next to the link. The cells that showed source values become formula cells. If the variable has no formula, they become input cells.
