Dimension totals
How the item rows of a broken-down variable roll up into its total row, and how to choose Sum, Average, Formula, or another aggregation.
A broken-down variable has one row for each item and one total row. The total row is the row of the variable itself. The Dimension aggregation of the variable sets how Eigenn calculates the total from the item rows.
1. Choose the aggregation
- On the variable row, select the options button (⋮).
- Select Aggregation → Dimension.
- Select an option.
| Option | Total row |
|---|---|
| Sum | The sum of the item values. This is the default for a new variable. |
| Average | The mean of the item values |
| Median | The median of the item values |
| Min | The lowest item value |
| Max | The highest item value |
| Formula | The formula of the variable, calculated with the totals of the variables that it reads |
| No aggregation | Empty |
An item with no number is left out. If an item shows an error, the total row shows the error too.
Formula needs a formula on the variable. An input variable with Formula has an empty total row.
2. Use Formula for a rate or a ratio
A sum of prices or margins has no meaning. Average gives each item the same weight. Formula calculates the ratio again from the totals.
Price per unit uses the formula Revenue / Units sold. All three variables use the Region dimension.
| Region | Revenue | Units sold | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | 1,000 | 100 | 10.00 |
| South | 6,000 | 300 | 20.00 |
| Total with Sum | 7,000 | 400 | 30.00 |
| Total with Average | 15.00 | ||
| Total with Formula | 17.50 |
With Formula, the total row calculates 7,000 / 400 = 17.50.
3. Totals of two dimensions
When a variable uses two dimensions, Eigenn rolls up the inner level first. Each row of the outer dimension shows the total of its inner items. Then the total row rolls up the outer rows. Each level uses the same aggregation.
4. Formulas that read a broken-down variable
A formula on a variable with the same dimension reads the same item. A formula on a variable without that dimension reads the total row.
For example, Consolidated net margin has no Entity dimension. Its formula Net profit / Revenue reads the total rows of Net profit and Revenue. To read one item, see Dimension references.
An item can have its own formula. Unless the aggregation is Formula, the total row still rolls up the item values. To go back to the shared formula, open the formula of the item and select Use parent formula.
5. Time totals are a different setting
Aggregation → Time sets how periods add up into quarters and years. It does not change how items add up. See Time totals.
6. Hide rows without a change to the totals
In the grid header, select Slice dimensions. The menu lists each variable that has item rows. Select a variable, then select an option:
- All shows the item rows and the total row.
- Aggregate hides the item rows.
- Group by hides the total row.
- Filter by shows only the items that you select.
These options change only the rows that you see. The total row still includes every item.
