Create a variable

Add a variable to a section, give it a unique name, and give it values, a formula, or a data link.

Create one variable for each driver, assumption, or result that the model needs. A new variable is an input with 0 in every period. After you create it, you type values, add a formula, or link it to data.

You need edit access to the model. A shared view does not show the New variable rows or the row options.

1. Add the variable

  1. Go to Scenario planning → open a model.
  2. Find the section or group for the new variable.
  3. Select New variable at the end of that section or group.

Eigenn adds a row named New variable at the end of the section or group. If a variable already has that name, Eigenn adds a number, such as New variable 2.

You can also put the pointer on a section row and select + (Add a variable to section name).

2. Give the variable a name

  1. Put the pointer on the new row and select ⋮ (Options for New variable).
  2. Select Rename.
  3. Type the name and press Enter. To cancel, press Escape.

Follow these rules for names:

  • Use 1 to 120 characters. Spaces are permitted.
  • Use a name that no other variable, section, or group in the model has. Eigenn ignores upper and lower case when it compares names.
  • Do not use a formula keyword as a name, such as month, quarter, year, today, or none. A formula reads the keyword, not the variable.
  • Put the unit or the period in the name when it helps, such as Monthly churn rate.

When you rename a variable, Eigenn changes every formula in the model that uses the old name.

3. Give the variable values

Choose one of these methods:

MethodActionNext page
Type valuesDouble-click a period cell, type the value, and press Enter.Change an input over time
Add a formulaSelect ƒ (Add formula) in the Formula column of the row. Type the formula and press Enter.Write a formula
Link dataSelect the database icon (Add data) in the Data column of the row.Link a variable to data

4. Check the type and format

A new variable copies its type, format, and total settings from the first variable in the same section or group. If there is no variable there, it copies the first variable in the model. Check these settings after you create the variable:

  1. Open the options menu of the variable.
  2. In the top row of the menu, select the value type. The types are Number, Currency, Percent, Date, and Boolean.
  3. Open Format and Aggregation to check the display and the totals.

See Format a variable and Time totals.

Delete a variable

Open the options menu of the variable and select Delete. Eigenn does not delete a variable that another formula uses. The message names the variables that still use it. Change those formulas first, then delete the variable again.
